VBIO formed in 2007 in a fusion of two already existing associations, the VdBiol (short for: Association of German Biologists) and vbbm (short for: Association for life sciences and biomedical organisations), both major representatives of Bio and Life Sciences in Germany.
The newly founded VBIO combined about 5.300 individual members, more than 30.000 members of life science organizations and 75 companies and institutions.
Thus, VBIO united members involved in bio and life sciences in schools, universities, industry, administration, research institutions and free-lancers. The two formerly existing head-quarters were maintained. The Munich branch now primarily takes care of training and career, the Berlin branch works on topics surrounding science and society.
